Road Construction

San Marcos Boulevard traffic flow improvements

San-Marcos-Blvd-construction-area.png

What to know

  • Construction will be on San Marcos Boulevard between Rancho Santa Fe Road and Knights Realm
  • Shopping center entrances maintained
  • Lanes reduced
  • Anticipate traffic delays

Construction schedule

  • June 15 – August 2026
  • Monday- Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

What’s planned

  • Extended left turn lanes on westbound San Marcos Boulevard to Rancho Santa Fe Road. By making the turn lanes longer, more cars can fit in the turn lanes and move out of the through lanes, helping reduce backups and improve overall traffic flow in the area.
  • No left turn from eastbound San Marcos Boulevard into the shopping center. Drivers will still be able to access the shopping center from S. Rancho Santa Fe Road and westbound San Marcos Blvd. Removing this left-hand turn will help improve safety and keep traffic moving more smoothly through the corridor.
  • Extended median fencing in front of the high school. This enhancement is designed to guide students to cross at the designated crosswalks at Knights Realm and Rancho Santa Fe Road, rather than mid-block. Encouraging crossings at the signalized intersections will improve safety for students and drivers alike.
  • Construction is planned during the summer while school is out of session, to help minimize traffic impacts.

The city appreciates the community’s patience as we continue making roadway safety improvements across San Marcos.

Traffic signal safety upgrades

The City of San Marcos is updating traffic signals citywide with new retroreflective backplates — bright yellow borders around signal lights — to improve visibility and safety for drivers, especially at night and during power outages.

Minor traffic impacts are expected at each location while work is completed.
