Animal Services

The San Diego Humane Society provides comprehensive animal control services for the City of San Marcos. From dog licensing and microchipping to reuniting lost pets with their owners, SDHS is here to help. Other services include animal adoptions, educational programs and investigating concerns or complaints about animals.

Animal licensing

  • All dogs aged four months or older must have a valid license and wear it at all times. Proof of rabies vaccination is required to obtain a license.
  • SDHS partners with DocuPet to make pet licensing easy. Licenses can be purchased or renewed online at sandiego.docupet.com.
  • DocuPet perks: Each tag is an official license and includes HomeSafe™, a 24/7 lost pet service to help reunite pets with their owners.

Barking dogs or crowing roosters

  • Contact SDHS during operating hours at 619-299-7012.

Lost pets

  • Visit SDHS during operating hours (10 a.m. – 6 p.m.) to search for your lost pet. Bring a photo of your pet to assist with identification.
  • Learn more on the lost pet webpage.

City leash law

  • Dogs must be leashed at all times unless in a designated off-leash area or confined to a residence or backyard.
