Solar Permits

A small rooftop solar system is one that:

  • Produces 10 kilowatts (kW) or less of electricity.
  • Provides 30 kilowatts (kW) or less of thermal energy.

Important: Your solar system must follow all local and state building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and fire safety codes. Solar panels cannot exceed the height limits set by your property’s zoning rules.

 

Homeowners

Available for single-family residences using the city's standard central inverter or micro inverter plans. To apply

Step 3.Submit

Submit your permit application through our online portal by selecting the "Roof Mounted Solar PV Expedited" option.

Step 4.Get your permit

Estimated processing time is 1-3 business days. 

Contractors

This self-issued permit is available only to contractors via the SolarAPP+ webpage. It checks your solar design for code compliance.

Step 2.Submit plan

Submit your design on the SolarAPP+ webpage.

Step 3.Pay and download

Pay the processing fee and download approved plans and certificates.

Step 4.Get business license

Obtain a City of San Marcos business license.

Step 5.Submit form and pay

Log into the city’s online permitting system.

Attach the permit declaration form and pay for your permit.

Step 6.Schedule inspection

Schedule your inspection via the city’s online permitting system (inspection cannot be scheduled without a completed Permit Declaration Form).

 

Multifamily/commercial

Solar systems that don't qualify for expedited review or SolarAPP+ can:

Submit a full set of plans and supporting documents through for review by internal staff.

Step 2.Get permit

Estimated processing time: 5-10 business days.
