Our history

Old fire station

The San Marcos Fire Department was established in 1936 as a volunteer fire department dedicated to protecting the growing community of San Marcos. In 1956, the department hired its first full-time firefighter, Fire Chief Charles A. Carpenter. Over the next decade, the community experienced steady growth, and by 1972 the department had expanded its career staffing with two additional full-time firefighters while continuing to rely on approximately 20 paid-call firefighters who served alongside the career staff.

In 1968 and 1969, the department constructed its first permanent fire station at the corner of Richmar Avenue and Firebird Lane. Throughout the 1970s, continued residential and commercial growth led to the hiring of additional full-time firefighters and the expansion of fire protection services.

In 1980, the department opened its second fire station on South Rancho Santa Fe Road in the Lake San Marcos area. The station was dedicated in honor of Fire Chief Charles A. Carpenter for his years of service and leadership. At that time, the department operated a fleet consisting of three structural fire engines, three wildland fire engines, and one rescue squad. Rapid development during the mid-1980s required additional staffing and resources to meet the increasing demand for emergency services.

In 1987, the San Marcos Fire Protection District became a subsidiary district of the City of San Marcos. This transition provided the governance, management, and funding necessary to support the City's rapid growth. One year later, in 1988, the department introduced advanced life support paramedic services to the community. That program has continued to expand, and today every frontline fire engine and ambulance is staffed with firefighter-paramedics.

During the 1990s, the department constructed its third fire station in the Woodland Park neighborhood on the east side of the city. The station was dedicated to the Bucher family in recognition of their collective 101 years of service to the San Marcos Fire Department. As emergency incidents continued to increase, the department placed its first ladder truck into service in 1993. During this same period, the paid-call firefighter program was gradually phased out as the department transitioned to an entirely career workforce.

Beginning in 2000, the City of San Marcos experienced unprecedented residential, commercial, and educational growth. California State University San Marcos and Palomar College expanded significantly, while new master-planned communities, business parks, industrial centers, and retail developments transformed the community. To support this continued growth, the department opened its fourth fire station in the San Elijo Hills community in 2008.

In 2015, the department experienced an unprecedented increase in annual emergency call volume. That increase, combined with the City's continued growth, continues to drive planning efforts to ensure the department maintains the appropriate staffing, resources, and response capabilities needed to provide efficient and effective emergency services.

Today, the San Marcos Fire Department is a modern all-hazard emergency response agency serving more than 95,000 residents across approximately 33 square miles from four strategically located fire stations. The department responds to approximately 12,000 emergency incidents annually and provides fire suppression, advanced life support paramedic services, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, fire prevention, public education, and emergency preparedness for residents, visitors, businesses, and educational institutions throughout the City and surrounding district lands. The department also operates within a highly integrated automatic aid and mutual aid system, allowing personnel to respond throughout San Diego County and across California during major emergencies.

San Marcos continues to experience strong residential, commercial, and institutional development, resulting in increasing demand for emergency services. The department remains committed to maintaining the staffing, equipment, and operational readiness necessary to meet these evolving needs. Through strategic planning, continuous training, innovation, and strong community partnerships, the San Marcos Fire Department continues to build on nearly 90 years of dedicated service while delivering professional, compassionate, and reliable emergency response.

Since its founding, the San Marcos community has strongly supported its fire department. The department is deeply grateful for the contributions of its volunteers, career firefighters, elected officials, and community members whose commitment has shaped its history. That continued partnership remains the foundation of the San Marcos Fire Department as it moves confidently into the future, protecting life, property, and the environment for generations to come.
