With high temperatures expected to continue through the weekend, the City of San Marcos is reminding residents to take precautions to stay safe while spending time outdoors.

Whether enjoying local parks, attending community events or completing outdoor activities, residents are encouraged to plan ahead and take simple steps to prevent heat-related illnesses.

The City recommends:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.
  • Limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, generally between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, sunscreen and a hat when outdoors.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.
  • Check on older adults, neighbors and others who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat.

Residents are also encouraged to take advantage of ways to cool off around the city, including San Marcos' splash pads and public pools. For those looking for a public air-conditioned place to beat the heat, the San Marcos Library is open to the public.
