With Halloween approaching, the City of San Marcos is reminding residents to take extra precautions on local roads and in neighborhoods as families head out for trick-or-treating on Saturday, Oct. 31.

Halloween brings more children and families onto neighborhood streets, particularly during evening hours when visibility is reduced. Whether driving, walking or riding a bicycle or e-bike, everyone plays a role in helping keep San Marcos streets safe.

The City encourages residents to keep the following safety reminders in mind while celebrating Halloween:

Slow down and stay alert. Drivers should use extra caution in neighborhoods, watch for children crossing streets and avoid distractions behind the wheel.
Be visible. Trick-or-treaters should wear bright or reflective costumes and carry flashlights or glow sticks to help drivers see them.
Cross streets safely. Use sidewalks and designated crosswalks, look both ways before crossing and avoid distractions such as cell phones.
Ride responsibly. Bicyclists and e-bike riders should wear properly fitted helmets, use lights after dark, follow traffic laws and watch for pedestrians.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to talk with their children about safe walking and riding practices before heading out for Halloween festivities. Drivers should anticipate increased pedestrian activity throughout the evening, slow down in residential neighborhoods and allow extra travel time.

By staying alert, remaining visible and following traffic laws, residents can help make Halloween a safe and enjoyable experience for the entire community.
