The City of San Marcos hosted an e-bike safety class instructed by the San Diego County Bike Coalition today at the San Marcos Community Center to help riders learn the rules of the road and practice them alongside licensed cycling instructors.

The class covered key topics including traffic laws, bike lanes and how to safely ride in shared spaces. Participants learned about specific San Marcos e-bike traffic laws and they got to practice hands-on training through practice drills and riding with traffic along San Marcos streets.

Helmet safety was another focus of the event. Helmets are required by law for riders under 18 and strongly encouraged for all riders. Proper helmet fit includes:

  • Two fingers between the eyebrows and the helmet
  • Two fingers between the chin and the strap
  • Straps forming a V at the ears

The class was offered as part of the city’s “Ride Right” campaign, focusing on e-bike safety education. As the first city along the Highway 78 corridor to ban e-bike riders under age 12, San Marcos continues to promote safe riding and local traffic laws. The city, in partnership with the Sheriff’s Department, San Marcos Unified School District, and parents, encourages residents to ride responsibly and stay informed about e-bike safety guidelines. To learn more, visit our e-bike safety webpage
